FM Belfast Interview
Top creators in the Icelandic music scene, leading the best line ups all over Europe, and a non- missing check for any self-respecting festival fan. We talked with them
-among other things- of what’s going on behind it’s quiet country, where bands swarms steadily; their projects, and a look into their Backyard Documentary
: a real ode to the nordic music.
How was the creation of the sound in your first album How to make friends? Which indeed made you earned a lot of them. It was recorded in our homes, our studio and borrowed studios over the course of 2 years. The sound was not discussed or planned as a whole. It was sort of made up as we went along. And along with this we met many many nice people and made friends.
What’s behind Underwear song? Is it a statement? Sounds cool and cold to do it in Reykjavík. Behind most people’s underwear are their private parts. Behind our Underwear is among other things an old memory of being bored. Not having money or means to get far away from your neighborhood. I’m not going to explain it any further, since the song has different meaning to different people that listen to it. I don’t want to spoil it for them.
Tropical topic is recurrent in your songs, it’s obvious why, but still makes me wonder what you guys think in boreal winter? (We’re from Costa Rica actually, you should try our caribbean house) I would love to trade houses with you, especially during the winter. I think it’s probably common to think about tropical islands during winters in Northern Europe. Most people in colder countries probably daydream about the sun and sand during winter.
Backyard documentary, was built in an intimate way, with friends-bands at home. What you wanted to show on it? When the economy crisis hit our country, our national television station decided it would be a smart thing to do to save money by stop having local musical acts playing in a popular evening show. Before that it had been a nice documentation of many Icelandic bands, and we thought it would be a pity if there wouldn’t be any documentation about this period of a certain local music scene because of this. Then one guy in our band thought it would be great if we would just do it ourselves. That idea turned into Backyard.
Bands emerge with powerful sounds in Iceland, what’s happening with the music scene there? All sort of things are happening here. It is actually pretty hard to keep track of it. New bands seems to pop up everywhere.
Which projects are coming up? We are just finishing a new video and are working on a single. In may we will be touring and in june and july i’m going to have a yardsale.
